Beck 03.11.16

F41A2641 - Beck 031116 - sBeck was the headline performer on the first day of the McDowell Mountain Music Festival in Phoenix, AZ on March 11, 2016.  Beck is a multi-Grammy Award winning artist with wins in 1997 for his song Where It’s At and album Odelay, in1998 for his album Mutations and almost 20 years later in 2015 for his album Morning Phase.

Beck’s set was a nice retrospective of both his widely popular radio hits and his critically acclaimed hits that may not have received quite as much airtime.  The setlist was dominated by tracks from Beck’s second studio album Odelay (Devil’s HaircutThe New PollutionJack-AssWhere It’s At, and Sissyneck) and sixth studio album Guero (E-Pro, Que Onda Guero, Girl, Black Tambourine, Hell Yes, and  Go It Alone), which together comprised half of the setlist.  Interestingly, the set included no tracks from Beck’s most recent album, the 2014 release Morning Phase, despite the album having won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Best Rock Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. Reflecting on Beck’s set, it reminds you of just how far Beck has travelled over the span of his career from Loser, his first hit song released in 1984 through Gamma Ray and Soul of a Man off of 2008 release Modern Guilt.  Beck’s music has, in many ways, really been quite the musical journey.

Beck’s set was well received by the festival audience, many of whom clearly came just for the headliner.  Beck was energetic and enthusiastic throughout the set, interacting often with both the crowd and his band.  Beck did a fine job of striking that difficult balance – satisfying those die-hard fans who while proudly share with you their knowledge of Beck’s most obscure recordings and also the casual fans who primarily know Beck from his radio-friendly hits, which is a truly difficult and admirable feat to accomplish.
