Steve Hackett 04.02.16

FromACOLYTEtoWOLFLIGHTplusGenesisClassics-2016-6757Steve Hackett brought his Acolyte to Wolflight with Genesis Revisited Tour to the Talking Stick Resort Showroom  on Saturday April 02, 2016.

Hackett is a self-taught guitarist who never receiving any formal instruction or training.  He joined Genesis in late 1970.  At that time, Genesis was a progressive rock band fronted by lead vocalist Peter Gabriel.  Hackett performed with Genesis from 1970 to 1977 and then left to pursue a solo career.  In Hackett, Steve co-founded the supergroup GTR with Steve Howe of Yes and Asia fame.  The next year GTR disbanded, and Hackett resumed his solo career.  Since then he has been releasing solo albums with his latest being Wolflight in 2015. He has been touring worldwide performing both solo and Genesis works.  On March 15, 2010, Genesis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  Hackett developed and became one of the first guitarists to experiment with the tapping technique.  Eddie Van Halen is better known for using the tapping technique and attributes learning it while attending a Genesis concert in the 1970s.  Hacket also introduced the sweep picking technique, which was later popularized by fellow guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen.

The 2-plus hour show consisted of 2 parts, the first being Steve’s solo works and the 2nd part being Genesis songs.  Normally the band takes a break between parts, but on this night they played straight though.  Hackett’s acoustic guitar work and the band’s harmonies on Loving Sea were amazing.  Their performance of the Genesis song The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was great and by far one of the audience’s favorites.  It was fun to see both Hackett and the audience getting into the music.  The current touring members of Hackett’s band are: Roger King (keyboards), Gary O’Toole (drums), Rob Townsend (sax & flute), Roine Stolt (bass & 12 string guitar) and Nad Sylvan (vocals).  If you like classic rock and early Genesis works, then you will love this show.  Hackett’’s guitar work is outstanding and worth the price of the ticket alone.  This show is a definite must for any early Genesis or “Prog” Rock fan.
