The Used brought their 15 Year Anniversary Tour to the Marquee Theatre in Tempe on April 13, 2016. The Used, from Ogden Utah, has released 6 studio albums over the past 15 years, most of them going Gold. Many critics have attempted to label the band as “emo” or “screamo”, but founding member, Jeph Howard has declared, “we’re a rock band that’s all we’ve ever been”. The current members of the band are: Bert McCraken (Lead Vocals), Jeph Howard (bass), Justin Shekoski (Guitar) and Dan Whitesides (Drums).
The band is on a multi-city tour with 2 shows on consecutive nights per tour stop. The first night in each city they are playing their first album, self-titled The Used, in its entirety and on the second night in each city they are performing their second album, In Life and Death, also in its entirety. I was lucky enough to cover the second show. Having covered a lot of heavy metal shows, which tend to draw a mostly male audience, I was pleasantly surprised that about 50% of the audience were women. I should not have been surprised because my daughter has enjoyed The Used tremendously over the years.
The second album, In Love and Death, was influenced by the death of Bert’s ex-girlfriend from a drug overdose while pregnant with his child and remains to this day an incredibly powerful album. The album spawned three singles: Take It Away, All That I’ve Got, and I Caught Fire.
